Preparing a polymer layer on a substrate, comprises providing the substrate, initiating the polymerization of a monomer with a free radical initiator and feeding a gaseous radical initiator to the substrate. The radical initiator is present as a part in a chemical compound, which is fed as a gaseous photolytic radical initiator and is released with electromagnetic radiation of a predetermined wavelength of the radical initiator of the chemical compound. An independent claim is also included for a device comprising a sealable reaction chamber, a feeding device for supplying a monomer, a supply line for supplying a gaseous initiator for initiating the polymerization, and a region of a substrate, and a window for coupling electromagnetic radiation of a predetermined wavelength into the reaction chamber for releasing the radical initiator as a part of the chemical compound in the form of a photolytic radical initiator.
