The method involves interrupting metering of fuel for high pressure delivery by a metering unit (5) mounted in an inlet path (1), and adjusting high-pressure delivery of a high-pressure pump (2), so that pressure deviation in a high pressure accumulator is produced during lack of high pressure delivery when fuel inlet pressure in the inlet path falls below a minimum value. The minimum inlet pressure is stopped over opening pressure of a connecting valve. A compression phase is formed within the metering unit. An independent claim is also included for a device for monitoring hydraulic pressure in an inlet path of a high pressure pump for high pressure delivery of fuel in a fuel injection system.
