The method involves detecting rotational speed of rotating crankshaft of internal combustion engine. The time derivative (242) of gradient of rotational speed of crankshaft is determined. A sliding mean value (244) of gradient (222) of time derivative of rotational speed is determined. A difference value (243,245) between time derivative of gradient of rotational speed of crankshaft and sliding mean value within predetermined time window, is calculated. The irregular combustion process is determined, when calculated difference value is less than predetermined reference difference value. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) device for detecting irregular combustion process in cylinder of internal combustion engine; and (2) computer program for detecting irregular combustion process in cylinder of internal combustion engine.
