The method involves examining a noisy input signal in a continuous manner to determine whether an input signal is within or outside of a dead band. A dead band width and a zero point of the dead band are adapted to noise power of the input signal depending on a time period of the input signal. A predefined system time constant and a filtered output signal is continuously outputted as a dead band signal, which corresponds to a smoothed input signal. The band width is increased by a factor when a time of input signal is upward and passed down within a period of time by the dead band. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for filtering a signal, comprising a signal input (2) a controlling device comprising an input (3) a computer program has a set of instructions for performing a method for filtering a signal (4) a computer program product has a set of instructions for performing a method for filtering a signal.
