The machine (1) i.e. household dish washer, has a sensor (25) determining a characteristic of a flushing liquid (S) that is circulated in the machine. A controlling- and/or regulating unit (2) is formed in such a manner that the characteristic of the flushing liquid is determined as a reference measurement before opening a dosing unit (26) and as a comparative measurement after opening the dosing unit. A flushing program is selected and/or modified on the basis of reference and comparative values to be determined during the reference and comparative measurement. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a dish washer.
