In the checking step, a percentage reduction of the patient dose rate is greater than the percentage reduction of the image quality. The image recording is performed with the first imaging parameters, when the percentage reduction of the patient dose rate is smaller than the percentage reduction of the image quality. A first efficiency value indicating a ratio of the image quality and the patient dose rate is determined on the basis of the first imaging parameters. A second efficiency value indicating the ratio of the image quality and the patient dose rate is determined on the basis of the second imaging parameters. The patient dose rate is detected by a detection device for detecting the patient dose rate. A voltage of the radiation source, a stream of the radiation source, an exposure time, a degree of pre-filtering the radiation emitted by the radiation source, and/or a size of a radiation focus are used as the imaging parameter. An X-ray device is used as the image pickup device. An independent claim is included for an image pickup device such as an X-ray device.
