The drive (10) has a fixed deflection roller (16) attached to a looper car (14) that is connected with a motor-driven winch drum (12). The car is movable on a rail at a variable distance to a fixed point (15) in two of running directions (19, 20, 23) of a horizontal strip accumulator. A cable winch (13) made of high-tensile plastic and steel cable is deflected from a deflection pulley around 180 degree to the drum. The drum is arranged behind the fixed point towards the running directions. The winch is movable transverse to the third running direction proportional to length of the winch.
