The method involves determining a root mean square value (IRMS) of an electrical variable i.e. current (I) supplied to a battery over time, and operating the battery based on the square value. The variable is limited such that the square value is held below a predetermined threshold value (IRMSsoll). A control variable (4) is determined from a difference between the threshold value and the square value. The control variable is set to zero if the difference between the threshold and square values is positive. A resulting limit is determined from sum of the threshold and square values. An independent claim is also included for a device for operating a battery of a vehicle.
