A method for improving the reliability and performance of vehicle-to-vehicle networks (V2V networks) is disclosed, wherein digital certificates are necessary for message authentication and some messages may be lost during transmission. The method uses a variable renewal period between certificates to optimize communication throughput based on network conditions such as node density and bandwidth saturation. Under some network conditions, the renewal period between certificates can be increased so more certificate abstracts are sent between full digital certificates to reduce the average message size. Under other network conditions, the renewal period between certificates can be reduced to allow more frequent message authentication by receiving nodes. Empirical data and an adaptive controller are used to select the renewal period that provides the best performance based on network conditions.
