The invention relates to an operating method for an, in particular direct-injecting, internal combustion engine having several combustion chambers, in particular for a direct-injecting Otto engine, e.g. B. a motor vehicle, with at least partial low-NOx combustion (NAV) and with several partial operating procedures, in which between an RZV partial operating procedure with pure room ignition combustion (RZV) and a NAV partial operating procedure is switched, in the case of the NAV partial operating procedure to one Ignition point (ZZP) a largely homogeneous, lean fuel / exhaust gas / air mixture with a combustion air ratio of λ ≥ 1 is externally ignited in the respective combustion chamber by means of an ignition device and the flame front combustion (FFV) started by the external ignition changes into a room ignition combustion (RZV). By combining the NAV partial operating method with the RZV partial operating method, the engine load range in which a space ignition combustion (RZV) can be carried out is increased and consequently the fuel consumption and the NOx emission values are also reduced in this extended engine load range.
