The furnace has an annular coil assembly (5) arranged between a furnace head (2) and a furnace base (3) and surrounding a melting pot (4). An annular bridging section is provided between an active coil section of the coil assembly and the furnace head. The bridging section is formed as a single- or multi-piece part (6) that is made of a refractory material i.e. refractory concrete, and separated from the active coil section and furnace head. The single- or multi-piece part has same inner- and outer diameters as the active coil section.
