The method involves adjusting the positioning element (1) in a state, in which an actuating element (8) is acted upon by the restoring force. The positioning element is placed in an operating condition, in which an actuating drive (2) is driven, such that a current is suppressed through an electric circuit of the actuating drive. The error present in the electric circuit of the positioning element is detected if the deviation between a measured position of the actuating element and a modeled position of the actuating element is smaller than a predetermined threshold. Independent claims are included for the following: (1) a device for detecting a type of error in a positioning element; and (2) a computer program product with a program code for detecting a type of error in a positioning element.
