The adapter has an optical coupling system which is formed in or secured to a shared partitioning section of an adapter housing for optically coupling optical signals between a first side of the rear partitioning section and a second side of the rear partitioning section. An electrical conductor configuration interconnects the first and second electrical contact configurations for electrically coupling electrical signals between the first and second electrical contact configurations. An independent claim is included for an adapter assembly having both optical and electrical communications capabilities.
