The method involves determining a correction signal for fuel mass by a lambda controller based on measuring signal of exhaust gas probe. The performance of cylinders of internal combustion engine is diagnosed (S5) within preset operating range of the engine on satisfying a preset condition. The performance diagnosis of cylinders is performed (S7) only in detection phase by introducing the correction signal with a proportional hop along with an integral modified parameter into the controller. An independent claim is included for device for operating internal combustion engine.
