The method involves supplying electrical heating power to a heating coil of a gas discharge lamp (LA), where the heating power is produced by a heating circuit, which is pulsed by a control unit (1). The control unit wobbles frequency and/or switch-on time and/or a duty cycle of pulsing of the heating circuit, during constant light power of the gas discharge lamp. The frequency and/or switch-on time and/or the duty cycle of pulsing of the heating circuit are periodically increased and reduced under constant maintenance of temporal average value. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) an integrated circuit such as an application-specific integrated circuit or a microcontroller (2) an operation apparatus for a gas discharge lamp, comprising a pulsing switch.
