The unit (10) has a measuring scale (20) at which measuring marks (21) are periodically arranged along a measuring direction (11). A pair of receiver coils (E11) is arranged within a transmitter coil in the measuring direction. Another pair of receiver coils (E13) is arranged within another transmitter coil in the measuring direction, where the pairs of coils are switched in a series manner. Winding directions of the pairs of coils are equal to or opposite to the transmitter coils, where distance between the pairs of coils is an integral multiple of a pitch distance (lambda).
