A vehicle heat exchanger processes an exhaust gas recirculation flow. A method for regulating contaminant deposits from combustion by-products in the heat exchanger includes repeatedly changing a flow control device that controls the exhaust gas recirculation flow through the heat exchanger from an original position to an intermediate position and back to the original position. The original position is determined based on a required EGR flow into an intake manifold.
