The tool has a wedge (28) exerting forces on a preset breaking point (16) i.e. recess, of a shaft (10). Plate-like auxiliary elements (18) subject crank arms (14) adjacent to the preset breaking point with the oppositely aligned forces axially acting relative to the shaft. Pins (12) to be separated are inserted in openings of the plate-like auxiliary elements and/or the wedge. The wedge is arranged between the plate-like auxiliary elements. The wedge is tapered on a side. The auxiliary elements are designed in two-parts. An independent claim is also included for a method for fracture splitting of shafts i.e. crankshafts, at pins arranged between two crank arms of the shafts.
