The method involves transmitting wireless signal between mobile device (1) and signal transmitter/receiver (4) and evaluating reception field strength of received signal (6,9) of mobile device or signal transmitter/receiver. The difference between mean value and most recently determined maximum value of reception field strength is determined cyclically and the existence of mobile device in vehicle (10) is determined, if difference falls below or above predetermined threshold. The detection is made to check whether mobile device left in vehicle, depending upon a temporal change of reception field strength after detecting stepping out occupants from vehicle. An independent claim is included for device for detecting a mobile device left in a vehicle.
