The holder (1) has a vessel receptacle (2) including a receiving opening (3) and three iris-like movable slats, which are arranged along circumferential direction of the receiving opening to adjust clearance diameter of the receiving opening. A drive unit (5) moves the slats between an open position and a fixing position in which the slats are received at a vessel exterior wall for fixing a vessel i.e. beverage container, in the vessel receptacle. The drive unit comprises a transmission unit including arrangement of three deflection rollers and a toothed belt. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a method for receiving a vessel in a cup holder (2) a method for removing the vessel from the cup holder.
