The method involves transporting an item e.g. flat postal mail, to upper and lower receivers along transport direction. A decision is made whether the item is transported to a processing system without previous processing. A decision is made whether the item is transported to the processing system according to rotation at a rotational axis vertical to an item plane. A decision is made whether the item at the processing system is transported to direction reversal devices (RE-1, RE-2). A decision is made whether the item is removed. Independent claims are also included for the following: (1) a device for checking an item processed by a processing system (2) a method for processing an item.
