The tool (100) has a fixed lower frame or a punch (5) cooperating with a movable upper frame (3) or a die to shape a sheet (4) placed initially between the lower and upper frames. The lower frame comprises a lifting unit (7) that lifts the sheet with respect to the punch. The lifting unit comprises an energy source (8) associated with a lifting pad (9). A deformable element i.e. gas spring (11), connects the lifting pad with the upper frame so as to maintain an identical space between the lifting pad and the upper frame during a withdrawal phase of the upper frame. An independent claim is also included for a method for stamping a sheet by a stamping press.
