The method involves sorting and routing stream of mail items through an automatic postal sorting installation (2) to a recipient, and producing a digital image (7) of the mail item to recognize an image of current data identifying the recipient. The current data is compared with identification data stored in a user database (13) to detect whether the mail recipient is a mail tracking service user. The digital image of the mail item is sent to a virtual mailbox (BALV) of the recipient. An independent claim is also included for an automatic postal sorting installation comprising a unit for receiving postal address data through an Internet portal.
