The gear (1) has a top part i.e. box (2), secured to an aircraft, and a swiveling bottom part (3) carrying wheels of the aircraft. The bottom part is oriented by an orientation controller of the gear or an exterior towing device. A safety device comprises a detecting unit (5) for detecting rotation of the bottom part at an angle equal to or greater than a limit angular threshold value. The safety device has alerting units generating an alert in response to the rotation of the bottom part. The detecting unit is formed by an electromagnetic or optic proximity probe (6).
