Use of NOOT gene or its ortholog and/or paralog, ankyrin domain protein and BTB/POZ encoded by the genes, for the modulation of the abscission of the flower, fruit, leaves and/or petals, in a gymnosperm species, preferably spruce, Ginkgo biloba, pine or cedar, or an angiosperm plant species, preferably monocots and dicots excluding pods of crucifers, is claimed. Use of NOOT gene or its ortholog and/or paralog, ankyrin domain protein and BTB/POZ encoded by the genes, for the modulation of the abscission of the flower, fruit, leaves and/or petals, in a gymnosperm species, preferably spruce, Ginkgo biloba, pine or cedar, or an angiosperm plant species, preferably monocots and dicots excluding pods of crucifers, is claimed, where: the ankyrin domain protein and BTB/POZ encoded by the NOOT gene have an identity and a similarity of sequence of at least 40% to at least 55%, at least 42% to at least 57% or at least 45% to at least 60%, respectively for BTB/POZ domain, and/or identity and similarity of a sequence of at least 42% to at least 60%, at least 45% to at least 65% or at least 48% to at least 70%, respectively, for the ankyrin domain; ankyrin domains have a sequence of SEQ ID NO: 178 (comprising a fully defined 137 amino acid sequence as given in the specification); BTB has a sequence of SEQ ID NO: 136 (comprising a fully defined 163 amino acid sequence as given in the specification) and BTB of protein has a sequence of SEQ ID NO: 91 (comprising a fully defined 483 amino acid sequence as given in the specification); BTB/POZ encodes the wild NOOT R108 gene of Medicago truncatulaof which the sequence is represented by SEQ ID NO: 1 (comprising a fully defined 2804 base pair sequence as given in the specification); and the gene is modified by mutagenesis, preferably by introducing at least one mutation or deletion, or by transgenesis, for producing mutated gene NOOT of which the expression is modified. Independent claims are included for: (1) process of modulating the abscission of the flower, fruit, leaves and/or petals, in a gymnosperm plant species, preferably spruce, Ginkgo biloba, pine or cedar, or an angiosperm plant species, preferably monocots and dicot plant species, with the exclusion of pods of crucifers, comprising mutagenesis or transgenesis of the NOOT gene to produce a mutated NOOT gene, resulting in the removal of ankyrin domain protein and mutated BTB/POZ coded by one of the mutated genes, or suppression or alteration of the activity related to the formation of the abscission zone of a protein mutated at ankyrin domains and BTB/POZ encoded by one of those mutated genes, unmutated BTB/POZ and ankyrin domain protein encoded by the NOOT gene; and (2) process-I for screening a plant species in which the expression of NOOT gene comprising identification of a mutation present in NOOT gene or transgenic construction (or DNA fragment) introduced into the plant species leading to any spatio-temporal modification of NOOT gene expression.
