The device (10) has an elongated unit i.e. cable (20), including an attaching end (22) for attaching the device to a receiving structure of a building. The end is movable in translation under action of tension (T1) higher than/equal to a release tension, from a utilization position to a deployed position. Energy absorbing units are placed between a support assembly and the cable, and include deformable parts e.g. reliefs (94), plastically deformed under the action of a thrust shaft (60) integrated to the assembly when the tension exerted on the end is higher than/equal to the release tension. The deformable parts are formed of teeth (96) arranged on periphery of a circular flange, where the flange is made of aluminum or aluminum alloy. An independent claim is also included for a lifeline installation comprising an absorbing device placed between a cable and an anchorage.
