The method involves searching a code carried by a signal (101) emitted by a satellite in an observation time slot, where detection of the code indicates modulo of emission time with respect to a period. Another code in another observation time slot, which is restricted than the former slot, is searched. The latter observation time slot corresponding to the period is shifted until detecting the latter code, where the detection of the latter code indicates the modulo of the emission time with respect to another period, and allows acquisition of the latter code. An independent claim is also included for a receiver for a global positioning system, having multiple channels.
