The method involves cooling and partially condensing gas containing carbon dioxide in a heat exchanger (7), and sending partially condensed gas to separator phases (9). The liquid in the separator phases is sent to an upper part of a fractionating column (31). A part (39) of a carbon dioxide enriched liquid flow forms a liquid product. Another part (37) of the carbon dioxide enriched liquid flow is sent to another heat exchanger (13), where the latter part of liquid flow is partially vaporized before being sent to a lower part of the column. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for separating gas containing carbon dioxide to produce carbon dioxide enriched liquid flow.
