The device has a division unit for dividing a light impulse into secondary impulses (18, 19). A detection unit e.g. photomultiplier, detects reflected fractions (112, 113) of the secondary impulses. A measurement unit measures data for each secondary impulse, where the data represents journey time of the light between emission of the light impulse and reception of each fraction. A determination unit determines information, representing distance between the device and a reflection position of each secondary impulse on a ground surface (110), for each secondary impulse, from the data. An independent claim is also included for a land survey system.
