The method involves removing U-shaped tubes from a heat exchanger during optimization of an exhaust gas recirculation module, before installing another exhaust gas recirculation module (1c). The tubes utilized in the installed recirculation module are fixed at a replacement plate during optimization of the former exhaust gas recirculation module. The replacement plate is provided with a number of gas circulation openings that depends on number of tubes removed from the heat exchanger.
