The device has a ladder (1) for providing access to a footbridge (3) that is placed on a container. The ladder is equipped with a retractable ladder cage (2) arranged in communication with the footbridge. The ladder occupies a retracted position along which the cage does not project from the container and a deployed position along which the cage projects from the container.
