The method involves allowing gas (1) to be cooled to specific pressure in a heat exchanger (6), and sending the cooled gas to a phase separator (V1) to produce carbon dioxide enriched liquid (7) and a gas (11) enriched with light impurity e.g. hydrogen. The impurity enriched gas is heated in the exchanger. A portion of negative kilocalories necessary to produce the liquid is supplied by refrigeration cycle. Refrigeration cycle gas heated in the exchanger to the specific pressure is compressed and cooled, and expanded to another pressure for being cooled during the refrigeration cycle. An independent claim is also included for an apparatus for liquefying carbon dioxide enriched feed gas containing light impurity.
