The method involves directing a luminous flux (5) in a direction of transmission area (6) located under a sole (1) of a foot (2) of an individual (3), and measuring transmitted luminous intensity (7) through the skin (4) of the foot at a reception area (8) located under the sole of the foot of the individual. An alternating component representing the characteristic of cardiovascular activity of the individual is extracted from a measured signal. Cardiovascular characteristic of the individual is estimated from the information conveyed by the extracted alternating component. An independent claim is also included for a device for estimating a cardiovascular parameter of an individual standing on his/her feet.
