The invention proposes a method for diagnosing a failure of a supercharged engine. A first estimated value of the power of the turbine is calculated from a first set of associated parameters or engine air intake circuit, comprising at least the pressure of the air at the inlet of the compressor, the boost pressure, the mass flow rate of the air passing through the compressor and the temperature of the air at the compressor inlet. The invention provides for calculating the ratio of the second estimated value divided by the first estimated value, and for comparing this ratio with a predefined threshold, beyond which it is concluded that the supercharged engine has failed. The driver is then alerted, by example by lighting up a warning light on the vehicle's dashboard. The invention also proposes an internal combustion engine equipped with a variable geometry turbocharger, suitable for implementing the fault diagnosis method.
