A stereoscopic image display device includes: a display element (10) selectively switchable between a two dimensional and a three dimensional mode; and a patterned retarder (20). The display element includes a pixel array including a plurality of subpixels, which are respectively formed at crossings of column lines and row lines. The patterned retarder includes a plurality of first retarders (RT1), each of which transmits light from the display element as a first polarization component, and a plurality of second retarders (RT2), each of which transmits the light from the display element as a second polarization component. When in stereoscopic mode, sub-pixels of every 4th row or column display black data to prevent cross-talk while the sub-pixels of remaining rows and columns display left eye and right eye images using RGB colour data.
