PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly accurately detect the driver's eyelids.SOLUTION: Distances d between edges which are detected and paired from images which show a driver's face are computed sequentially. On the basis of a change in the computed distances d, low-probability candidates for pairs of eyelid edges are eliminated, and consequently, the edge pairs remaining in the end are detected as upper eyelid edge and lower eyelid edge pairs (S208). Therefore, the detection is made with consideration given to not only features near the eyelid edges, but also movement as the eyelids. Accordingly, this method can highly accurately detect the edges of the driver's eyelids.
