PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a propagation loss measurement method enabling improvement in the accuracy of measurement of a propagation loss in a multi-mode fiber.;SOLUTION: A propagation loss measurement method, for use in measuring a propagation loss of light for each mode of a mode fiber, uses a cut-back technique that includes: causing incident light to enter a multi-mode fiber under a given incidence condition, measuring intensity of emission light emitted from an emission end of the optical fiber having a first length; cutting the aforementioned optical fiber to a second length shorter than the first length; re-measuring the intensity of emission light with the second length; and measuring the propagation loss of light in the multi-mode fiber on the basis of the difference in the intensity of emission light between the first and second lengths and the difference between the first and second lengths. The method includes the steps of: causing the incident light from a wavelength-variable light source to enter an incidence end of the multi-mode fiber; two-dimensionally measuring a light intensity distribution of the intensity of emission light of an output of the multi-mode fiber; and measuring the intensity of emission light with a wavelength of the incident light of the wavelength-variable light source changed, and calculating the propagation loss in each mode.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2013,JPO&INPIT
