PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a wave height and wave direction estimating method of an incident wave, accurately estimating wave height and wave direction of a wave that has arrived, in a state where an automatic position holding control is being carried out.;SOLUTION: The direction of the wave drift force applied to a hull is calculated from the control force for holding the ship position and the bow azimuth, the direction of this control force, the force caused by other than the wave acting on the hull, and the estimated value of this force in the direction of action. The wave direction of the wave that has arrived is estimated from the direction of this wave drift force based on the preestablished data showing the relation between the direction of the wave drift force and the wave direction of the wave that has arrived.
