PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and device for detecting malfunction of a rolling mill detecting occurrence of small bending when rolling so as to cope with it at an early stage.;SOLUTION: The malfunction detecting device 28 includes a vibration sensor 30 disposed on a bearing holder 26 of a second roll stand 18, a determinator 32 determining malfunction based on vibration data detected by the vibration sensor 30, and a notification unit 34 notifying malfunction occurrence when the malfunction has been determined by the determinator 32. In occurrence of the small bending, a peak value of a vibration speed in vibration within a range of 90-130 Hz in vibration frequency reaches at least 0.04 cm/s.
