PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide surface modified graphite maintaining the crystallinity of graphite, also having high specific surface area, and widely applied, e.g., to battery/cell materials such as a catalyst for a fuel cell, a capacitor and a lithium ion battery, and to provide a graphite interlayer compound and a catalyst using the modified graphite. PSOLUTION: The modified graphite is characterized in that specific surface area is 200 to 1,000 mSP2/SP/g, R value as the peak intensity ratio between the D band (1,350 cmSP-1/SP) and the G band (1,580cmSP-1/SP) in a Raman spectrum is 0.3 to 0.7, and the size Lc (002) of crystallites in the direction of the c axis in the (002) face according to an X-ray diffraction method is 30 nm. The graphite interlayer compound is obtained by being intercalated with a metal chloride using the modified graphite. The catalyst is obtained by using the same, and the production methods use them.
