PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a peripheral device automatically formatting an unformatted medium inserted thereto without any dependence on an OS and without using any special software.;SOLUTION: On receipt of a READ CAPACITY command from a PC 2, a controller 12 determines whether an inserted medium is unformatted or not. If an unformatted medium has been inserted, the controller 12 transmits a FORMAT UNIT command to an ATAPI drive 13 to format the medium.
