PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to easily identify a defective section in the case where communication failure occurs on an optical line taking a form of PON (Passive Optical Network).;SOLUTION: In an optical line fault section estimation system, when a fault occurs in ONU #1 (Optical Network Unit #1) and this ONU#1 issues an alarm message, a fault section estimation terminal 21 implements monitoring of fault of the ONU#1 through a terminal 12 for GE-PON-OSS based on a procedure A, and when receiving the alarm message, the terminal 21 estimates that an apparatus of the ONU#1 itself has a defective. Furthermore, monitoring of fault of an ONU#k (k=2-8) is implemented through the terminal 12 for GE-PON-OSS in a procedure B, and when receiving messages of ONU communication break, communication line failure and ONU power supply down, monitoring of fault of the other ONU (for example, ONU#2) connected with the same optical splitter 14 is implemented, whereas if a message indicative of normalcy of communication is acquired, then it is estimated that an optical fiber on a lower side of the optical splitter 14 connected with the ONU#1 has a defective.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
