PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of detecting recessed points on the outline of a region contained in a binary image, in order to segment the region into a plurality of partial regions. PSOLUTION: A projecting region is defined on condition that pixels outside of the region do not exist inside a projecting envelope created out of regions. Underneath it is the outline of the region that divides the region into a plurality of sections where the region becomes projecting regions locally, and connections between the sections are recessed points.
