PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for treating cellulosic biomass using a microorganism belonging to Clostridium thermocellum producing an enzyme exhibiting a stronger cellulolytic activity than that of Trichoderma reesei.;SOLUTION: The cellulosic biomass is treated with Clostridium thermocellum JK-N44 or JK-S14 which is the microorganism belonging to the Clostridium thermocellum, growing under weakly alkaline conditions, and having a cellulose-, fructose-, and sorbitol-assimilating ability or a microbial cell culture product thereof. Cellulose can be degraded with an amount of the enzyme of at least ≤1/40 of the enzyme derived from the Trichoderma reesei at a rate equal to or higher than that of a filamentous fungal enzyme.;COPYRIGHT: (C)2010,JPO&INPIT
