PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To detect an arrangement direction of a plurality of dots in a dot sequence included in a dot group easily and with a high degree of precision. PSOLUTION: An arrangement direction detection device images a dot group 8 present in a roughly rectangular area which is long in a temporary arrangement direction that has been found to be roughly parallel to an arrangement direction to be detected, and in which the length is three or more times greater than the maximum distance between dots which is the maximum of the distance between the two dots 811 adjacent in the arrangement direction. A convex hull 82 is generated from the image of the dot group 8. The longest line segment of a plurality of line segments included in a partial convex hull 821a on the (-X) side of the convex hull 82 and in a partial convex hull 821b on the (+X) side respectively are specified as direction indication line segments 825a and 825b. An average value of the directions on the basis of the temporary arrangement direction is acquired as an arrangement direction from the direction indication line segments 825a and 825b, thereby detecting the arrangement direction of the plurality of the dots 811 in the dot sequence 81 included in the dot group 8 easily and with a high degree of precision.
