PPROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and an apparatus for suppressing self-heating of carbonized products after the carbonization treatment of organic matter-containing sludge. PSOLUTION: This method for suppressing the self-heating of carbonized products comprises the steps of: making a dehydrated sludge after dehydrating treatment of organic matter-containing sludge to pass a dryer to be dry-treated, carbonation-treating the dried sludge by passing it through a carbonization furnace 16, and treating the resultant carbonized product with a coating material containing lime and a binder for fixing the lime on the surface of the carbonized product to cover the carbonized product with the coating material.
