PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a variable power optical system having satisfactory optical performance, an optical device with the variable power optical system, and a variable power method of the variable power optical system.;SOLUTION: The variable power optical system ZL to be mounted in an electronic still camera 1 or the like has a front lens group FG and a rear lens group RG along an optical axis and in order from an object side. The rear lens group RG has a first lens group RG1 having a positive refracting power, a second lens group RG2 having a negative refracting power, and a third lens group RG3 having a positive refracting power. When a lens position condition is changed from a wide-angle end state to a telephoto end state, a space between the front lens group FG and the first lens group RG1 varies, a space between the first lens group RG1 and the second lens group RG2 increases, and a space between the second lens group RG2 and the third lens group RG3 decreases.
