Aqueous or aqueous alcoholic compositions (A) for cleaning or rinsing hard surfaces contain at least one polybetaine (I) having (a) an overall permanent anionic and cationic charges over a pH range of 1-14, each betaine unit having as many permanent anionic charges as cationic charges and (b) a weight average molecular weight (M w) of 5000-3000000 (preferably 8000-100000, especially 10000-50000). An independent claim is included for the preparation of (I).
