An ambient noise measurement system for acoustic field characterization in shallow waters, the said system has a vertical linear array enclosed in a polyurethane tube. The said array being connected to a marker buoy situated above the sea surface being connected through plurality of sub surface float and bull dog floats respectively, the other end being connected to a sinker weight through cable router and a DATA ACQUISITION MODULE enclosure and a chain holding the sinker weight in such a way various elements of the system from sub surface floats to sinker weight are linear and vertical disposition in such that An automated subsurface system was developed for time series noise measurements in shallow waters for acoustic oceanographic applications. The system consists of a Vertical Linear Array (VIA) as the measurement tool, integrated with programmable data acquisition unit along with processor module packed in an indigenously developed sub sea pressure casing. The power to the system was provided through battery pack in a separate enclosure and the connection between the battery pack and Data acquisition module was performed by suitable under water connectors and cables. The above were connected to the sinker cum anchor weight. All the above modules were connected in a mooring system with appropriate subsurface floats. The vertical stability of the whole system was checked in the acoustic tank as well as in the open environment.
