Generating 3D game or application video streams by using object data stored in a database, applying low-latency compression to the video streams and transmitting them to a remote user
Disclosed is a video streaming apparatus. The apparatus is comprised of one or more servers (402) of a hosting service centre (210), a high-speed data storage unit (405) coupled to the one or more servers (402) and a compression unit (404). The high-speed data storage unit (405) stores data for objects of a complex video scene having unpredictable changes. The one or more servers (402) are operable to execute a twitch video game or application for one or more users remote from the hosting service centre (210). Execution of the game or application produces uncompressed video of 3D animation. The uncompressed video of 3D animation is generated by the one or more servers (402) using, at least partially, the data streamed from the high-speed storage unit (405). The compression unit (404) compresses the uncompressed video of 3D animation to produce compressed streaming interactive video for transmission to the one or more users. The compressed streaming interactive video is compressed with a worst-case round trip latency of about 80ms such that the at least one of the users perceives that responses to user inputs to the twitch video game or application are as instantaneous as if the twitch video game or application were running locally on a client device (415) of the user.
